11. from 1913 until the 1970’s, the palace was turned into Bukit Zaharah English School
12. during the 1970’s this place was replaced as the Bukit Zaharah Religious School
13. when the religious school was moved to a new building in 1972, the building was left abandoned until today
14. today the building is a restricted area (Istana Bukit Zaharah is located inside the area of Muzium Diraja Abu Bakar and Istana Besar Johor) and is under the protection of Muzium Diraja Abu Bakar, Istana Besar Johor and Yayasan Warisan Johor
